Some in New York are considering it, and the American Beverage Association is pissed

Just a few months after the New York City soda ban passed, rumors are swirling over an energy drink ban in parts of New York State — and the American Beverage Association (ABA) is not too happy about it.

After the Board of Health in Suffolk County, N.Y., began to discuss an energy drink ban for individuals younger than 19 years old, a representative from the ABA spoke out against it. Calling it a "slippery slope," the representative, Chris Gindlesperger, said in an interview that if a ban were to happen, kids should be carded trying to buy coffee or tea. "...To be consistent then coffeehouses [like] Starbucks and others would have to … card young adults before serving them coffee or tea," Gindlesperger said in an interview.

The ABA is said to have sent a letter to William Lindsay of the Suffolk County Board of Health, who is the presiding officer. The ABA also noted that energy drink makers, like Monster, have already voluntarily submitted to certain marketing restrictions to prevent advertising to young people. Still, will it be enough to wave off an energy drink ban? After so many reports to the FDA, we imagine legislation to ban the potentially deadly drinks may not be far behind.

My job for 4 years was to help a large animal veterinarian mainly dealing with cattle. The average cow is between 1000 and 1200lbs when it came to giving cows medicine we literally had to put them in what's called a "squeeze chute" which is designed to hold large animals in place by basically being a giant clamp that goes around their body.

The only cattle we wouldn't use a squeeze chute on were the calves which at about 160lbs or so took multiple people to hold them down

    • As the title suggests, Matt made it so that every two minutes, everyone explodes. The explosion doesn't immediately hurt anyone, but it makes their jobs a hell of a lot harder because it will wreck anything around each player, as well as launching them into the air to take fall damage, with a mere 3-second warning to get away from whatever they're working on lest it be blown to bits. The AH crew is tasked with making homes, farms, and such, and the fact they're constantly exploding leads to plenty of anguish.
    • Jack gets the worst of it. He decides to stay on the opening island and make food for people, but lack of sufficient lighting means that every night, he gets swamped by hostile mobs, especially Creepers. To make things worse, everyone decides to troll him by making his work much harder. The worst things to happen to him come from Trevor and Gavin, who were genuinely trying to help him.
      • Trevor tried to help Jack by helping Jack with his chicken farm, and at one point he went in the pen to play with the chickens. Unfortunately, he didn't notice the countdown on the bottom-left of the screen screen, exploding and killing all but one chicken. Cue enraged screaming from Jack, berating Trevor for his lack of situational awareness.

      Uh-oh&mdashguests are due to arrive soon and you just noticed a funky stench coming from the garbage disposal. The fix: Toss the peel of an orange down the drain and run the appliance for 30 seconds. The fruit's acids will neutralize odors, while the coarse rind scours away food particle buildup on the blade.       Procter & Gamble Co. recalls Scope mouthwash

      By Problem Partner Kristin Samuelson | The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Procter & Gamble Co. on Friday announced a voluntary recall of approximately 35,000 1-liter bottles of Scope Original Mint and Peppermint Mouthwash because the caps do not meet the child-resistant closure requirement, according to a June 25 CPSC press release.

      "The mouthwash contains ethyl alcohol and certain bottles have malfunctioning child-resistant caps and lack the statement, 'This Package for Households Without Young children,' as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act," the press release said. "Ethyl alcohol is toxic and can cause serious injury or death if ingested by children."

      The recalled bottles of mouthwash contain the number "4" on the bottom of the bottle. (See below for a photo that illustrates the location, courtesy of CPSC.) Consumers can try twisting the cap on these bottles and if they are successful in twisting the cap off without squeezing the tabs on the cap of the bottle, the cap is not child resistant and should be kept out of reach of children.

      Kellogg recalls cereals for unusual flavor, odor

      By Problem Partner Kristin Samuelson | The Food and Drug Administration and Kellogg Company on Friday announced a voluntary recall of certain Kellogg's cereals because of an off-flavor and odor coming from the inner liner of the package, according to a June 25 Kellogg Company press release. The odor and flavor could cause nausea and diarrhea, the company said.

      The list of recalled cereals include select packages of Kellogg's Corn Pops, Apple Jacks, Honey Smacks and Froot Loops.

      The company said the potential for serious health problems is low, but concerned customers should not eat the recalled cereal and can call call Kellogg Consumer Response Center at 888-801-4163 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (CST) with questions.

      "Only products with the letters 'KN' following the Better If Used Before Date are included in the recall," the press release said. "Products with a "KM" designation are NOT included in the recall. In addition, no products in Canada are affected."

      A Food Scale And The Lazy Keto Diet Helped Me Lose 107 Lbs.

      My name is Megan Faraday ( ), and I'm 25 years old. I'm from Ontario, Canada, and I own a sign post installation company. After struggling with my weight and self-esteem for years, I decided to try a version of low-carb dieting called "lazy keto. " I've now lost 107 pounds.

      I struggled with my weight my whole life. I remember my mom putting me on diets from as early as 10 years old. I was constantly trying to lose weight with no success. I had gotten my weight down in high school for a short period of time but gained it back shortly after. No healthy plan ever stuck, and my weight held me back from experiencing a lot of things in life. My weight had the biggest effect on me mentally. I had absolutely no self-esteem and had uncontrollable social anxiety. I just felt uncomfortable in my skin 24/ I would make decisions based on my weight and what people would think of me. People made negative comments to me about my weight my whole life, and it really affected every aspect of my life and the choices I made.

      In addition, I really had no energy or desire to do any sort of physical activity and knew that something had to change. Just walking up the stairs would get me winded, and I just thought: Enough is enough. My heaviest weight was 265 pounds at the age of I was ready for a better life.

      I wore this dress exactly 1 year ago today for my aunts wedding. It was fitted exactly to my measurements and fit perfectly. Look at me swimming in it now! There's 30 Lbs between these pictures, I had already lost the majority of the weight but I still felt so uncomfortable. Sometimes when you're on a weight loss journey the end goal seems to far away and impossible but I'm so glad I saw it through and although the weight loss has slowed I know that each day I am slowly but surely making progress towards meeting my end goal.       I decided that I would try something similar by tracking calories and cutting carbs. I started by eating 25 grams of net carbs per day and a calorie count that works for me.

      I would make a lot of keto recipes, but I did not follow the standard keto diet exactly to the plan-I did more of a "lazy keto" diet. I've now started to reintroduce carbohydrates back into my diet, aiming for 75 to 100 grams of carbs per day. This works for me because I am still losing weight, but in a way that I will be able to sustain for the rest of my life.

      Dessert:Halo-Top ice cream barI started exercising about two months into my journey after losing 20 pounds just from changing my eating.

      I was too nervous to go into a gym in the beginning, but my friend Sarah had encouraged me to join her gym, and I started to go with her. Eventually I found the courage to go alone.

      I started working out three to five times a week in the gym, doing a mixture of cardio and weight training. I still work out three to five times a week but I am able to do so much more. I can run faster and longer, and I even go for runs outside. This is something I never had the confidence to do in the past.

      Exercise is also such a great way to see my progress. It's so motivating and it feels amazing to see myself progressing and conquering personal bests.

I can't believe I was that girl. I was in such a bad place for a long time. My mind, body and spirit were all so damaged. One morning I woke up and wanted more, I realized that I deserve happiness and to look and feel great and to be healthy.       Change one: I stopped expecting the scale to go down every first few times I saw the scale at a stand still or even spike up, I panicked. But that is all part of the process! Continue on and stay dedicated to your plan, and it will move.

      Change two: I started drinking lots of water. Everyone goes on and on about getting your water in, but it has truly made all the difference on my journey. I drink 100 ounces of water a day, and on the days I don't, I really can feel a negative difference.

It's so easy to over-scoop and go overboard on portions in the beginning while you're learning portion sizes, so it was really helpful for me to weigh my food. I've been on this journey for years and I still do it.

      Overall, I've lost 107 pounds, and I'm still working towards my health goals.

      Losing the weight was one of the hardest things I have done and definitely one of my biggest Every hard day that got me to this point was worth it, though. The confidence that I have gained is incredible. My weight no longer holds me back from doing fun things with my family and friends.

      I wish I could go back to the woman I was before this journey and tell her to love herself more, wear the cute clothes, and not to miss out on fun things just because of her size. It took me losing over 100 pounds to learn that, but that's okay too! Sometimes we need to do these things for ourselves to appreciate who we are inside and out.

      Biodynamic farming: Like anthroposophic medicine, only on the farm

      Rudolf Steiner had a farm, and on that farm he had some woo. It is called biodynamic farming, and what woo it is!

      [Editor note: The weekend was busy. I had to produce material for my not-so-super-secret other blog, and I didn’t view last week’s material to be sufficiently timely to crosspost here. So I dug deep into the vaults, all the way back to February 2006. Most of the links were broken, but thankfully the almighty Wayback Machine at still had the material. Besides, biodynamic farming is a topic I haven’t written about in years. ]

      I don’t write about farming much, if at all. True, I do write about anti-GMO pseudoscience, but it’s usually in the form of deconstructing bad studies that the woo is down on the farm (and winery), and it’s “biodynamic.” If you believe the hype, it’s the ultimate in farming technique that produces only the finest wine. Maybe it is and does, but, man, is there a lot of woo there! For example, check out these quotes:

      “Like a homeopathic doctor”? “Sick vineyards need homeopathy”? “Biodynamic vineyards radiate a vigor that can be felt”? Uh-oh. Sounds like woo to me. And, boy, is it ever! And some of it in the New York friggin’ Times, yet!

      So, what is “biodynamic farming”? Well, in essence, biodynamic farming’s a lot like organic farming, only with oodles of the most amazing woo added! If you believe what its advocates say, this is what it can do for your farm:

      While it encompasses many of the principles of organic farming, such as the elimination of all chemicals, Biodynamics goes further, requiring close attention to the varied forces of nature influencing the vine. It also emphasizes a closed, self-sustaining ecosystem.

      OK, sounds good so far. Who could argue with eliminating chemical pesticides in farming wherever possible? But what on earth are these “varied forces of nature” they’re talking about? It’s starting to sound woo-ey to me. But let’s see what’s involved:

      • Employs a series of eight herbal-based preparations applied to the soil in order to promote soil vitality through increased microbiologic activity and diversity (think of these as vitamins for the plant and soil). The more nutrient-rich and biologically diverse the soils, the more character in the wine.
      • Uses cover crops and companion plants to maximize the health of the vineyard environment.
      • Promotes pest control through soil management Biodynamic sprays and teas crop rotations and diversification and the encouragement of diverse animal, bird and insect populations that lead to self-regulating predator and prey relationships.
      • Aligns vineyard practices (planting, pruning, etc.) with the earth’s natural cycles (lunar, seasonal) for maximum health and development of the vines.

      Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? Who wouldn’t be in favor of minimizing pesticide use and using crop diversification to minimize the harmful effects of mass farming on the environment? Unfortunately, along with all these laudable goals comes a heapin’ helpin’ of good, old-fashioned woo. You see, biodynamics was derived from the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner back in the early part of the 20th century. The philosophy based on Steiner’s teachings, anthroposophy, forms the basis of the philosophy behind “biodynamic farming.” Anthroposophy, which means “human wisdom,” is also known as “spiritual science.” According to Rudolf Steiner, anthrosophy is:

      Anthroposophy is a path of knowledge to guide the Spirit of the human being to the Spiritual in the universe. It arises in man as a need of the heart, of the life of feeling: and it can be justified inasmuch as it can satisfy this inner need.

      Indeed, the very concept of biodynamic farming is based on a series of lectures that Steiner gave in Germany in 1924 at Schloss Koberwitz in what was then Silesia, Germany. (In actuality, Steiner was a prodigious lecturer and gave an incredible number of talks in his lifetime, many of which are archived here.) Reasonably, Steiner was concerned about the increasing use of chemicals in the form of artificial fertilizers and chemical pesticides in farming. Not quite as reasonably, he viewed this form of farming as having “spiritual shortcomings.” The central aspect of biodynamic farming is that the farm is viewed as a single organism, which should be viewed as a self-nourishing and self-replenishing system. So far, this is not that far out of the mainstream, although you can already feel a bit of woo creeping in, as if this is “Gaia Lite.”

      But if you really want to get the full feel of the woo involved in biodynamic farming, you really have to check out the recipes for eight different fertilizers that Steiner prescribed to “strengthen the life force” of the farm. These are numbered 500 through 507 (why 500 through 507 instead of 1 through 8, I have no idea). First, we have field preparations for stimulating humus formation:

      • 500: (horn-manure) a humus mixture prepared by stuffing cow manure into the horn of a cow and buried into the ground (40-60 cm below the surface) in the autumn and left to decompose during the winter.
      • 501: Crushed powdered quartz prepared by stuffing it into a horn of a cow and buried into the ground in spring and taken out in autumn. It can be mixed with 500 but usually prepared on its own (mixture of 1 tablespoon of quartz powder to 250 litres of water) The mixture is sprayed under very low pressure over the crop during the wet season to prevent fungal diseases. It should be sprayed on an overcast day to prevent burning of the leaves.

      This is some serious woo, stuffing cow manure into a horn and using crushed powdered quartz for…no apparent reason. Why dilute it in 40-60 liters of water? Why not 100? Or 25? “Whirling it in different directions every second minute”? What’s the reason for that? Why not every minute or every third or fifth minute? I suppose it must have something to do with the life force of the farm. But it gets woo-ier. Just check out the compost preparations:

      • 502: Yarrow blossoms (Achillea millefolium) are stuffed into urinary bladders from Cervus elaphus, Red Deers, placed in the sun during summer, buried in earth during winter and retrieved in the spring.
      • 503: Chamomile blossoms (Chamomilla officinalis) are stuffed into small intestines from cattle buried in humus-rich earth in the autumn and retrieved in the spring.
      • 504: Stinging nettle (Urtica dioca, and the whole plant in full bloom) is stuffed together under ground surrounded on all sides by peat for a year.
      • 505: Oak bark (Quercus robur) is chopped in small pieces, placed inside the skull of some domesticated animal, surrounded by peat and buried in earth in a place where lots of rain water runs by.
      • 506: Dandelion flowers (Taraxacum officinale) is stuffed into peritoneum from some cattle is buried in earth during winter and retrieved in the spring.
      • 507: Valerian flowers (Valeriana officinalis) is extracted into water.

      Alright, the parts about stuffing the intestines or peritoneii of cows or the urinary bladders of deer (what did the deer ever do to deserve this fate?), burying them on the farm for the winter, and then retrieving them in the spring are truly disgusting. Just imagine how much fun it is to dig this stuff up in the spring–probably even more fun than stuffing the various animal organs and burying them in the first place. I somehow picture sandal-shod, long-haired, tambourine-playing woo-meisters chanting magical spells as they bury these various “composts” around their farms in order to “strengthen its life force” before finishing up the day with a little drum playing and a mini Burning Man ceremony. But, hey, that’s just me. I do wonder, however, what’s the deal with all the horns used in these recipes? Thanks to an old episode of Skeptoid, I get an idea, as this is what Rudolf Steiner himself said about it:

      The cow has horns in order to reflect inwards the astral and etheric formative forces, which then penetrate right into the metabolic system so that increased activity in the digestive organism arises by reason of this radiation from horns and hoofs.

      Ah, yes, when I start hearing talk of “astral and etheric formative forces,” I know I’m right at home in some serious woo and that Friday is the perfect day to write about it.

      One thing you should notice is that 500 and 501 mixes one tablespoon of quartz powder into 250 liters of water and that 502-507 involve spreading mere ounces of the disgusting potion of decomposed plants and animal organs into many tons of compost. Truly, as the advocates of biodynamic farming say, this is indeed a homeopathic amount of whatever stinky concoction it is that they’re making. But, hey, it doesn’t matter, you know. After all, none of it has anything to do with any scientifically measurable phenomenon. Its purpose is to “strengthen the life force” of the farm. (I’m guessing that the stinkier the mixture, the more the “life force” is strengthened.) Also, like homeopathy, there’s a rather bizarre element of “like cures like,” except that it’s extended to an entire farm. This “like” is diluted to, in essence, undetectability but still somehow manages to retain some sort of therapeutic effect. This whole concept is taken to a ridiculous extreme when it comes to pest control. To Steiner, pests and weeds are are the result of “imbalances” between life forces emanating from the earth. Most biodynamic strategies to control pests or weeds involve ceremonially burning the pest or weed in question and then sprinkling the ashes over the farm, preferably at the right astrological time. Check it out:

      • Pests such as insects or Apodemus (field mice) have more complex processes associated with them depending on what pest is to be targeted. For example field mice are to be countered by deploying ashes prepared from field mice skin when Venus is in the scorpius.
      • Weeds are combated (besides the usual mechanical methods) by collecting seeds from the weeds and burning them above a wooden flame. The ashes from the seeds are then spread on the fields, which will according to biodynamic philosophy block the influence from the full moon on the particular weed and make it infertile.

      Oddly enough, even today, the whole concept of “biodynamic farming” is pretty well accepted, at least in the wine industry. Some wineries go to great lengths to make sure that they plant their crops at the right phase of the moon or under the right astrological alignments. It’s also not at all uncommon to see gushing reviews of wines from wineries that use biodynamic farming techniques, coupled with claims that the wine coming from such farms “tastes better.” The problem is, wine varies from year to year and from vineyard to vineyard, even when using the same species of grapes. There are good years and bad years similarly, there are vineyards that do a better job at making wine than others. There’s also a whole lot of subjectivity involved in the tasting and evaluation and rating of wines. It’s thus not too hard to see how confirmation bias, wishful thinking, and other logical fallacies could lead wine makers, wine drinkers, and wine reviewers to detect a salubrious effect on the wine from biodynamic techniques that may or may not be there.

      What’s really irritating about biodynamic farming is that it’s quite possible that the non-woo components of the technique may actually result in better crops or better wine, depending on whether we’re talking about farms or vineyards. After all, minus the woo, biodynamic farming involves nothing more unusual or special than hardcore organic farming with little or no pesticides. There’s no need to invoke magic or woo to explain why biodynamic farming, stripped of its mysticism, might potentially result in better crops or tastier wine. Yet, woo is what is invoked, in the form of bladders, horns, or or skulls full of herbs or blossoms buried in the farm, and biodynamic farming is considered quite natural, normal, even respectable. Almost nary is heard a skeptical word from wine reviewers, for instance.

      I could be wrong (in fact, I hope I’m wrong), but I’m guessing that most of these vineyards that advertise that they use “biodynamic” farming probably steer clear of the most blatant woo associated with Steiner and the technique. Either that, or they downplay the mysticism and burying of animal parts stuffed with various plants to decompose followed by the spreading the resultant mix over the soil and instead play up the organic farming angle. I’m also guessing that most of them probably don’t believe in the woo-iest aspects of biodynamic farmings. However, because somehow the term has become fashionable to the point that reputable newspapers publish glowing and credulous accounts of the wonders of biodynamic farming, few people seem to be aware of the serious woo involved or that biodynamic farming is nothing more than a form of organic farming gussied up with a huge helping of truly bizarre woo.

      You know, thinking about all this, perhaps I should postulate my own “philosophy” of farming or medicine. If I got EneMan involved, I bet I could come up with some sort of homeopathic farming woo that involves wine enemas and the depositing of the outflow onto the farm. (For a vineyard, like=wine, plus some human-made natural fertilizer added to the mix to “increase the life force of the farm.” What could be better?)

      The Post-Covid-19 Rules of Tipping

      For the past year, whenever Jillian Seroka picks up her usual almond milk cortado from Oslo Coffee Roasters in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan, she is presented with a prompt on the point-of-sale iPad asking how much gratuity to add on top of her $6 bill. She typically tips $3.

      “Sometimes, I walk away and I’m like, I probably could have gotten an appetizer at a restaurant for that price,” says Ms. Seroka, a 29-year-old who works as an advertising account manager.

      Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, she says she has found herself tipping service workers 30% or more to champion businesses that have struggled to stay afloat.

      “I feel good about it for supporting them but sometimes, by the time the tip is done and your different specifications with your coffee, you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I need to get my spending under control.’ ”

      Tipping on credit cards increased nationwide last summer, according to Mike Lynn, researcher and professor at Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration. Analyzing data from payment company Square, Prof. Lynn found that credit-card tips for quick-service and full-service restaurant delivery orders jumped from below 11% before the pandemic to above 15% in May of last year.

      How to Drink Baking Soda for Optimal Results

      Baking soda - also called bicarbonate of soda or sodium bicarbonate―dissolved in water, has long been used to relieve the signs and symptoms of arthritis, indigestion, heartburn, and infection, among other maladies. Baking soda, consumed in moderate portions and at appropriate times, helps bring about healthy body biochemistry.

      Different Ways to Drink Baking Soda for Health

      Baking soda can help in many cases. And for different cases, you may have to follow a varied dosage to get desired results.

      1. For Your Body's PH

      To find out your body's PH, buy some inexpensive litmus PH paper at your local pharmacy and measure your urine and saliva.

      First thing in the morning, your saliva PH measurement should ideally be between 7.0 and 7.4 before you drink anything. Expect your urine to be slightly more acidic in the morning, since your body has been clearing acids from your body all night. A urine PH reading between 6.0 and 7.0 is appropriate in the morning, and it should increase slightly during the day. Take these readings for a few days, tracking your results. If your PH levels are consistently lower than this, you can use a baking soda regimen to bring you to healthy levels.

      If your average is low or in the acidic range, drink a glass of water with a half-teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in it twice per day. You need to have acids in your stomach to digest food, so take baking soda only between meals. Continue to monitor your PH. If it's still low, drink this mixture up to four times a day as needed to improve your PH. Once your pH has normalized, eat more vegetables and less acidic food and you should be able to maintain the benefits.

      2. For Cold or Flu

      Baking soda has been demonstrated to reduce the duration of cold and flu, frequently eliminating symptoms in 36 hours. Experts recommend the following dosage schedule.

      1. Day 1 - Take six doses of baking soda in glass of water at about two-hour intervals.
      2. Day 2 - Take four doses of baking soda in a glass of water at the same intervals.
      3. Day 3 - Take two doses of baking soda in a glass of water in the morning and in the evening, and after that only once each morning until cold symptoms are gone.

      3. For Athletes

      Science is proving what athletes have known for years: Bicarbonate of soda can enhance sports performance. Baking soda appears to work best to enhance endurance and speed.

      Baking soda appears to reduce the acidity produced in the muscles during sports such as running or swimming.

      Sodium bicarbonate helps the body process lactic acid, which is responsible for the burning sensation produced in the muscles during hard exercise. Only elite athletes are likely to notice the benefits, however, since it only seconds, not minutes, off racing speeds.
