21 Delicious and Surprising Recipes You Can Make in an Air Fryer
Even if you haven’t taken the plunge and gotten yourself an air fryer, I’m guessing you’ve heard plenty about the convenient countertop appliance. I mean, it can mimic the effects of deep-frying with way less oil (and way less mess)—that’s pretty hard to compete with. Unsurprisingly, the possibilities for foods you can make in an air fryer are almost endless. It’s great for fries, obviously, but it’s also great for unexpected things like pie and corn on the cob. In other words, the number of air fryer recipes out there is pretty much endless.
OK, but like, what is it? Air fryers are cleverly designed to use a mixture of oil and air to “fry” food, but you can also just use an air fryer as a mini oven, setting it to a certain temperature and let it do its thing. If you’re looking to buy one, I can vouch for the Philips Avance XXL Twin Turbostar Airfryer ($300 at Amazon) being the absolute best option. Plus, with a four-quart basket capacity, it’s bigger than some of the others on the market. For a less expensive option, the Krups Air Fryer ($90 at Amazon) is also solid and has a 2.5-quart basket capacity, which is plenty for most things.
So, OK, now you have an air fryer, or at least have one coming in the mail. What to make? Like I said, the possibilities are many, but certain foods lend themselves especially well to the air-fry cooking method. Anything that you’d deep-fry is a good candidate for air-frying, but you can also make traditionally roasted dishes—or even baked ones. Here are 21 easy, delicious air fryer recipes to try, ASAP.

27 Easy and Healthy Air Fryer Recipes You Need to Try
If you told me a month ago that I’d be scouring food blogs for healthy air fryer recipes, I probably would have LOL’d. Not one to pine for the latest trendy kitchen appliance—I still don’t get the Instant Pot hype, TBH—I had mixed feelings when my thoughtful parents gifted me an air fryer for Christmas. But all it took was one batch of perfectly crisp fingerlings to convert me. Potato-y perfection in 10 minutes on my first try? Sold.
“An air fryer is just so convenient and can help you whip up amazing meals in half the time,” Dalina Soto, M.A., R.D., bilingual dietitian and founder of Nutritiously Yours, tells SELF. It’s essentially a miniature, countertop convection oven that cooks your food both fast and evenly A.F. by circulating superhot air around it.
The speed, ease, and consistency of the air fryer can help people feel more comfortable in the kitchen—something Soto says she’s seen with a number of her clients. “l think it does make [cooking] less intimidating,” she says. “It definitely helps with cooking more at home.”
For instance, there’s no waiting for the oven to preheat, so “you can pull it out and start cooking immediately,” Soto says. Air-frying also makes it easier to achieve a crispy golden-brown exterior without the mess and precariousness of a giant vat of scalding oil. And it comes with settings and instructions for cooking proteins like meat and fish that people are often afraid of under- or overcooking, Soto adds.
Feeling inspired yet?! We thought so. Whether you’re a new owner, prospective purchaser, or old pro, here are 27 healthy air fryer recipes for your air-frying pleasure.
A note about the word "healthy" here: We know that "healthy" is a complicated concept. Not only can it mean different things to different people, it’s a word that’s pretty loaded (and sometimes fraught), thanks to the diet industry’s influence on the way we think about food. At SELF, when we talk about food being "healthy," we’re primarily talking about foods that are nutritious, filling, and satisfying. But it also depends on your preferences, your culture, what’s accessible to you, and so much more. We selected these recipes with those basic criteria in mind, while also trying to appeal to a wide variety of nutritional needs and taste buds.
The Best Air Fryers
Like every kitchen appliance that starts to trend, makers are quick to jump on the bandwagon so they don’t miss the boat. The air fryer is no different. There are several different air fryer makers and everyone seems to have a preference.
When I purchased my air fryer two years ago I went to Consumer Reports for their air fryer reviews. After searching about, I decided on the higher rated Power AirFryer XL . For 2019 it comes in at #6 on their ratings list.
I’ve been happy with the Power AirFryer XL for it’s air circulation for crisp cooking and the 5.3 quart capacity cooking basket, but I do wish it had a stacking tray or cooking rack like the NuWave Brio 10 Quart Air Fryer. What I really like about it is the non-stick basket makes clean up is a breeze.

3. Chicken Drumsticks
A household favourite, mix crushed garlic, ½ tablespoon of mustard, 2 teaspoons of brown sugar, 1 tea spoon of chilli powder and one tablespoon of olive oil in a bowl and rub the drumsticks in the mixture. Leave to marinade for 20 minutes then place in a preheated air fryer at 200 degrees for 10 minutes. Adjust the temperature to 150 degrees for another 10 minutes until the chicken is cooked through. The results are moist and juicy chicken with crispy, spicy skin!
4. Quiche Lorraine
A more obscure option but equally delicious, making a quiche in an air fryer could not be easier. Line your ramekin with pastry (homemade or ready-made &ndash your choice!) and fill with the ingredients of your chosen quiche then place in the air fryer for 15 minutes at 150 degrees. You can either make one large quiche or mini ones, depending on the size of your ramekins and the air fryer basket.
5. Chocolate Cake
What better way to end all your previous fried goodness than with a chocolate cake, yes also prepared using the air fryer! Place the cake ingredients into an oven dish and into a preheated air fryer for 25 minutes, meanwhile make your favourite chocolate icing. Once the 25 minutes is up, prick the cake with a toothpick to ensure it&rsquos cooked, if it comes out sticky replace in the air fryer for another 5 minutes. Remove the cake and place on a plate, cover with the gooey icing and enjoy your air fried cake!

What size Kabobs Skewers fit in an Air Fryer?
It&rsquos important to check before you begin that the skewers you&rsquore using actually fit inside of your air fryer. We find 6-inch and 8-inch Skewers fit best in most air fryers. I suggest measuring the air fryer before ordering to be safe but you can not go wrong with the 6-inch as they are very short. If they do not fit that&rsquos more than fine you can just add the meat and veggies to the air fryer instead.
